Layer masks have at least one remarkable difference that is worth noticing, over clipping paths. Layer mask makes it possible to blur the transition between the cut-out object and the background.

Objects with blurry edges will integrate better with the new background using a layer mask. For this reason layer masks are better suited to cut out elements with a soft/blurry edge, like hair or other elements where a soft edge should be retained.
